Urban Landmarks: Pavilion of Light & Lookout Tower

Location and Client: Confidential

Landscape: Balmori Associates

The project includes two urban landmarks at opposite ends of a grand boulevard: the Lookout Tower to the east and the Pavilion of Light to the west.

The Lookout Tower is a slender 60-meter-tall structure with observation decks accessed by a cylindrical glass elevator wrapped by a spiral staircase. The tower, circular at its base, subtly transforms as it rises, culminating in a dramatic triangular form. It is clad with metallic panels that create soft reflections and that are perforated to filter the light entering the interior while framing fragmented views of the landscape.

The Pavilion functions as a light box aligned with the path of the sun. Its triangular-based pillars, clad in textured local stone, incorporate a series of translucent elements of varying heights that modulate the scale of the space along the pathway and capture sunlight dynamically throughout the day.
